Two political parties, the ruling Georgian Dream and the opposition United National Movement of former President Mikhail Saakashvili, will form part of the new parliament of Georgia elected under a proportional system, Central Election Commission reported after counting 99 percent of ballots. The ruling party garnered over 48 percent of the votes, while the opposition was supported by 27 percent of voters. The Alliance of Georgian Patriots won just under 5 percent, the benchmark required to get seats in the Georgian parliament. Parties take 77 seats of the 150-seat legislature, with the remaining 73 distributed through a plurality voting system. A second round will be held in most of Georgia’s constituencies, according to the preliminary results.
