Candidates with Criminal Cases:
Out of 836 candidates analyzed, 168 (20%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

  • Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 143 (17%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc.
  • Candidates with cases related to murder: 15 candidates have declared cases related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302).
  • Candidates with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 42 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-307).
  • Candidates with cases related to Crimes against Women: 5 candidates have declared cases related to cases, including assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (Indian Penal Code Section-354) and rape (IPC Section-376).
  • Candidates with cases related to Kidnapping: 2 candidates have declared cases related to kidnapping for ransom, etc. (Indian Penal Code Section-364A).
  • Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: 29(40%) out of 73 candidates fromBhartiya janta Party (BJP), 28 (38%) out of 73 candidates from Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP), 19 (33%) out of 57 candidates from Rashtriya Lok Dal(RLD), 15 (29%) out of 51 candidates from Samjwadi Party ( SP),6 (25%) out of 24 candidates from Indian National Congress(INC),and 38 (13%) out of 293 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 26(36%) out of 73 candidates from BSP, 22 (30%) out of 73 candidates from BJP, 15 (26%) out of 57 candidates from RLD, 13(26%) out of 51 candidates from SP,  and 34 (12%) out of 293 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Red Alert Constituencies*: There are 26 constituencies in the first phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections having 3 or more candidates with declared criminal cases. *Red Alert Constituencies are those which have 3 or more candidates with criminal cases contesting elections.

  • Crorepati Candidates: Out of the 836 candidates, 302 (36%) are crorepatis.

Party wise Crorepati Candidates: 66(90%) out of 73 candidates from BSP, 61(84%) out of 73 candidates from BJP, 40 (78%) out of 51 candidates from SP, 18(75%)out of 24 candidates from INC, 41(72%) out of 57 candidates from RLD and 43 (15%) out of 293 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

Average assets: The average of assets per candidate contesting in the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections is Rs 2.81 Crores.

  • Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 24 INC candidates is Rs. 13.18 crores, 73 BJP candidates is Rs 7.40 Crores, 73 BSP candidates have average assets of Rs 6.77 Crores, 57 RLD candidates have average assets worth Rs 5.15 Crores, 51 SP candidates have average assets worth Rs 5.98 crores, and 293 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 80.57 lakhs.
  • Zero asset candidate: 1 candidate namely Parvez Ali, independent candidate from Thana Bhawan constituency has declared zero assets in his self sworn affidavits.
  • Low asset candidates: The three candidates with lowest assets (excluding  candidate with zero asssets) are as follows:

Other Background Details

  • Education details of candidates: 402 (48%) candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 5th and 12th, while 336 (40%) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. 64 candidates have declared themselves to be just literates and 15 candidates have declared to be illiterate.
  • Age details of candidates: 581 (69%) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 239 (29%) candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years. While 3 candidate has disclosed to be older than 80 years of age, 13 candidates have not disclosed their age details.

Gender details of candidates: 70 (8%) female candidates are contesting in first phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly election this year.
